Utöver detta har Mats varit
I Italien sammanlagt ett och ett halvt år.1987 ringde en kille från Syd-Italien
och undrade om Mats ville göra en fasadmålning i samband med en
fasadmålningsfestival. Det var med mycket kort varsel, en vecka, men Mats
tackade ja och for. Just då gick han runt och gruvade sig, för att han skulle
måla om sitt hus. Men insåg att det är mycket roligare att måla ett hus i
Italien än hemma, så han åkte till Syd-Italien och målade en husvägg där. En
stor målning, sju meter bred och fyra meter hög. Den föreställer norrbottniska
fjäll och renar. Det motivet hade han aldrig målat förr, men han tyckte att i
hettan därnere så skulle det platsa med lite snö.
När Mats kom hem fick han
uppdraget att göra en stor målning till Frimurarna i Luleå, och den kallade han
’Katedralfantasi’ (se nedan).

Beside this Mats have been in Italy all together one and a half year.
1987 he was phoned up by a man from South-Italy who asked if Mats wanted to do
a mural-painting at a festival for mural-paintings. It was with a very short
notice, one week, but Mats said yes and went. At that point he was dreading to
paint the house at home. But realized that it was much more fun to paint a
house in Italy than to paint the house at home, so he went to South-Italy and
painted a house wall there. A huge painting, seven metres wide and four metres
high. It represent the mountains and the reindeers in Norrbotten. He had never
painted that motive before., but he thought it was appropriate with some snow
in the heat down there.
When Mats came home he got an order to make a big painting for the
Freemason in Luleaa, and he called that ‘Cathedral fantasy’ (see below).

Gogols

Han har även gjort en stor målning till teatern (se ovan). Den hängde först i teaterfoajén, men är nu flyttad den till teaterchefens rum. Eftersom Mats har gjort teatergrafik bl a från Gogols Revisorn, tyckte han att det var intressant att göra en stor målning som sammanfattar hela pjäsen.

He also had made a big painting for the theatre (see above). It was
first placed in the theatre lobby, but now hangs in the room of the theatre
director. Since Mats has made theatre
graphic among other things from Gogols ‘The accountant’, he found it interesting
to make a big painting that summarize the whole play.

Så
ringde borgmästaren från en by i Dolomiterna, Nord-Italien, och frågade om han
ville göra en fasadmålning där. Innan Mats åkte dit frågade han en tjej, Monika
från Ersnäs, om hon hade lust att bli en fresk i Italien. Vad kul, tyckte hon,
och följde med! Mats målade en fresk av henne, fyra meter hög, på gaveln av ett
hus. Motivet är Monika sittandes på hotellaltanen mittemot, smuttandes på ett
glas vin. På bordet står en butelj och om man tittar noga så ser man att på
buteljen står ordet ”skål”, ”för det var det enda svenska ord vi använde den
veckan hon var där” säger han och skrattar.
Mats jobbade under cirka tre
veckor för att göra fresken. Det är en fresk i klassisk freskoteknik. Han hade
två murare som sakkunniga, och Mats säger att det var en fantastisk upplevelse
att måla en klassisk fresk i Italien.

Then the mayor from a village in the Dolomites in North-Italy called him up, and asked if he wanted to do a mural-painting there. Before going there he asked a woman, Monika from Ersnaes, if she wanted to become a fresco in Italy. Nice, she said and came with him! Mats painted a fresco of her, four metres high, on the front of a house. The motive is Monika sitting on the hotel terrace opposite the house, sipping a glass of wine. On the table there is a bottle, and if you look closely you can find the word ‘skaal’ (the Swedish word for ‘cheers’) there, “´cause that was the only word we used the week she was there” he says and laughs. Mats worked with the painting for about three weeks to do the fresco. It was a fresco in classical fresco technique. He had two plasterers as advisers, and Mats says that it was a fantastic experience to paint a classical fresco in Italy.
